Hi! My name is Jesse Sanderson. For coming up on a decade, I have been working for the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH) in various roles after earning a degree in Studio Art with a specialization in Graphic Design from Michigan State University.
At MCAH, my current role is a System Administrator II/Help Desk Coordinator. My organization administers a database called a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), which gathers all sorts of data on homelessness for the states of Michigan and North Carolina. My role primarily relates to being the frontline worker for our help desk to provide support to our users as they work in the system, and as they complete the required certification in order to use the system on our website known as the HMIS Learning Center (which I was the lead designer for).
In 2023, I returned to school and am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Media and Information at Michigan State University with a focus of Human Computer Interaction/User Experience. My expected graduation date is December 2025. I am additionally pursuing a Serious Game Design & Research graduate certificate, with an expected completion date of December 2024.
The combination of my educational background in graphic design and my professional background in user-centered support has led me to shift toward a career in User Experience.
The design challenges I like to take on the most are those that can provide a real-world impact on others, especially those who may come from an underresourced background. The drive to do this began with volunteer work I did as a child, evolved through my work with the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, and continues through the UX design and serious game design work I do today.
Some of the recent projects I've worked on within this realm include Homeless Reach, an app prototype to streamline access to resources and to help provide emotional support to persons experiencing homelessness, We Speak Kiingereza, an English learning board game that provides supplemental learning to secondary school students in Tanzania who are vulnerable to dropping out due to trouble understanding English classroom instruction, and CLEARLY!, a speech therapy game for Parkinson's disease patients to practice their clear and loud speaking skills.
I invite you to look through my portfolio or reach out to me if you would like to learn more about how I design for good.
I like to spend my free time bicycling, playing basketball, and spending time with my three dogs and two cats. I also really enjoy traveling the world when possible (35 countries/territories and counting!). Going further back, I was a major band geek in high school, playing the trumpet in the marching band and serving as the drum major my senior year. This fall I got the chance to relive those memories and participate in an alumni band performance at my alma mater!
