Hi! My name is Jesse Sanderson. For over a decade, I have been working for the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH) in various roles after earning a degree in Studio Art with a specialization in Graphic Design from Michigan State University.
At MCAH, my current role is a System Administrator II/Help Desk Coordinator. My organization administers a database called a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) for Michigan and North Carolina, which helps leverage the power of data to take action to improve the homeless service delivery system. I was also the lead designer of the HMIS Learning Center, where over 1,000 new users each year become certified to use the HMIS.
In 2023, I returned to school and am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Media and Information at Michigan State University with a focus of Human Computer Interaction/User Experience. My graduation date will be December 2025, and I also completed Michigan State's graduate certificate in Serious Game Design & Research in December 2024.
In addition to my roles at MCAH and as a student, I am also currently the Digital Accessibility Intern for TechSmith Corporation where I collaborate across teams on both internal and external accessibility initiatives. Additionally, I currently hold two Research Assistant positions at Michigan State related to my work on two ongoing projects: We Speak Kiingereza and CN Vision.
The combination of my educational background in graphic design and my professional background in user-centered support has led me to this shift toward a career in User Experience.
The design challenges I like to take on the most are those that can provide a real-world impact on others, especially those who may come from an under-resourced background. The drive to do this began with volunteer work I did as a child, evolved through my work with the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, and continues through the UX design and serious game design work I do today.
Some of the recent projects I've worked on within this realm include We Speak Kiingereza, a language learning game focused on addressing language barriers in the classroom (so far, particularly in Tanzania, Kenya, and India), and CLEARLY!, an award-winning speech therapy game for Parkinson's disease patients to practice their clear and loud speaking skills.
I invite you to look through my portfolio or reach out to me if you would like to learn more about how I design for good.
I like to spend my free time bicycling, playing basketball, and spending time with my three dogs and two cats. I also really enjoy traveling the world when possible (36 countries/territories and counting!). Going further back, I was a major band geek in high school, playing the trumpet in the marching band and serving as the drum major my senior year. The last two years I got the chance to relive those memories and participate in an alumni band performance at my alma mater!
